Against the backdrop of China’s reform and opening-up and the establishment of a socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics, market entities across all sectors and ownership types have been actively engaged in market activities, thereby providing sustained impetus for the development of the Chinese and global economies.
Under Chinese law, the incorporation of any firm requires filing an application for establishment registration with the competent company registry. Consequently, basic information about these market entities is disclosed to the public, including—inter alia—principal business activities, registered address, registered capital, and date of incorporation. These openly available data constitute an exceptional resource for scholarly research on the survival of Chinese firms, sectoral distribution, and overall market vitality.
However, scholars frequently confront substantial difficulties when attempting to utilize these data. The volume and complexity of basic information registered with the Administration for Market Regulation are comparable to the “sands of the Ganges,” rendering both acquisition and manipulation prohibitively time-consuming and labor-intensive. To facilitate scholarly inquiry, USDataverse processes the raw registration data into multi-dimensional statistical tables, providing researchers with ready-to-use aggregates at various levels of granularity.
Data Characteristics
- Geographic Coverage: The dataset reports the number of registered enterprises for 32 provincial-level administrative divisions (provinces, centrally-administered municipalities, and autonomous regions) across China.
- Temporal Span: The dataset enumerates registered enterprises for the period 1980 to mid-October 2024, thereby capturing the evolution of China’s industrial and commercial development since the founding of the People’s Republic.
- Sectoral Coverage: The dataset covers 20 two-digit industries (e.g., Wholesale and Retail Trade, Accommodation and Food Services, Manufacturing) and, within each dimension, disaggregates statistics by section, division, group, and class.
- Dynamics: In addition to tabulating newly established firms, the dataset also records deregistered firms, allowing the derivation of active-firm counts.
- Multi-Dimensional Design: Statistics are provided in two-, three-, and four-dimensional formats, ensuring rich variables and comprehensive tables that satisfy diverse analytical requirements.
